Budapest chairlift to be fully renovated and get a brand-new look
The local government of District 12 of Budapest announced the budget plan for the complete renovation project of the city’s special and beloved vehicle, the Zugliget chairlift (Libegő), which will get a brand-new look once the renovation ends.
HVG reports that the decision is far from final as it depends on the support of the Hungarian Government, and regarding the current situation of the country, the leadership of the District is unsure of whether they would receive the necessary financial support. The renovation project includes demolishing the old structure of the chairlift and replacing it with new elements and nine additional metal structures.
Libegő will include eighty new chairs, each of them to carry four persons (currently two) 30 meters of distance from one another on the track.
The exact price was not mentioned in the document, although in the full 2020 budget of District 12, approximately 2.35 billion HUF (6 million EUR) was put aside for the chairlift. In 2019, this amount was 3.8 billion HUF (10 million EUR). Last year, the government of District 12 announced that the budget would be spent on the complete renovation of the chairlift along with its structure, buildings, lamps, chairs, ropes, electrical devices, and its two stations.

Originally, the renovation would have started at the end of 2019, to be completed by the end of 2020 or early 2021. The leadership of the district expects offers for the exact budget until June, which needs to be accepted and written into a contract, which means that renovating the chairlift could not start before the end of this year.
On the other hand, the district depends on the Hungarian Government for financial support, which is uncertain to be provided because of the current coronavirus epidemic, when money is needed for other matters.
